How to Raise Digitally Smart & Safe Kids SafeOnlineKit.com · Quick Start
Do These 6 Things Today
Short on time? These six actions take under two hours and block the biggest risks. Do these now, read the full chapters later.
Estimated time: 60–90 minutes
1
Set all social media accounts to private - right now
Open every app your kid uses (Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, BeReal, Discord). Settings → Privacy → Account Privacy → Private. This stops random people messaging them, finding their location, or stealing photos for deepfakes.

2
Move phones out of bedrooms overnight - tonight
Put a charging station in the kitchen or hallway. Phones go there at 9pm. This one thing is backed by solid research for better sleep, mental health, and grades. Make it a rule, not a punishment.

3
Turn on purchase approval for app stores and in-app payments
Apple: Screen Time → Content & Privacy → iTunes & App Store Purchases → Require Password. Google Family Link: set "Needs approval" for all purchases. This stops them from racking up charges on loot boxes and battle passes without you knowing.

4
Agree on a family safe word
Pick an odd word or phrase no one else knows. If someone texts claiming to be family and asking for money or help - and doesn't know the safe word - it's a scam. Tell your kid: "If you get a message from me that feels off, ask for the safe word."

5
Have the "nothing you tell me will lose you your phone" conversation
Say this to your kid: "If anything happens online - if someone's weird, asks for photos, threatens you, anything - tell me. You won't get in trouble. I won't take your phone away immediately. I'll listen first. I want to know what's happening." This one conversation is your biggest protection tool.

6
Set up your child's email account with a recovery address and 2FA
Log into their email. Add your email as recovery (Settings → Security → Recovery email). Turn on two-factor auth with an app like Google Authenticator or Authy (free). If their account gets hacked, you can get it back.

After these six - what next?
Print the Emergency Reference Card and stick it in a kitchen cupboard. Then grab the chapter that fits your kid's age (intro.php has a table). One a week gets you through everything. You don't have to do it all at once.
